A little bit ramshackle, with wobbly tables, fluorescent lights and limited seating, the Phat has shabby chic in spades. The burritos, quesadillas and soft tacos owe more to California cuisine than the Mexican staples they're modeled on: Burritos are stuffed with fragrant basmati rice, and the guacamole (costs extra but worth it) comes with tomato chunks and cilantro leaves. Pay at the checkout, grab a fudgy cellophane-wrapped brownie from the dish by the register, get yourself a cold Barq's from the fountain tap, and have a seat by the window and listen to the stream of eclectic '70s tunes that floats over the booths. Your server will quickly deliver the rest of your meal, and after you heap on the pico de gallo and salsa from the condiment station, you can sit back down, relax and watch the uptown traffic go by, or enjoy that food at home. -- Jennifer Saylor

Simply the best.

My husband introduced me to Phat burrito and I was hooked after the first one. I'd rather he bring me home a phat burrito then flowers any day. My favorite is the chicken with black bean and don't forget the salsa.

Best Bean Burrito

No one can touch the bean burrito at Phat. They have left the competition in the dust.

Funky Mexican in South End
By kltilly1 on 07/29/2004
From the outside artwork on the walls of this venerable building, you are forewarned that you are in for a most unusual experience. I used to bring my children here for breakfast on Saturday morning; well, it has been transformed into a great burrito shack with plenty of fixings on the side. 5 Stars Hands down.

Best Burritos in Charlotte
By double27diamond on 05/25/2002
Phat is getting some tough competition from the big chain burrito places but Phat still makes the best burritos in town. The ingredients are fresh and the taste is closer to true Mexican spices than the typical mass-market fare. There are a variety of salsas, including my favorite 'Hot Mama.' I patronize Phat when I have to work late and I'm starving. I come out filled up and ready to go. We've taken the kids (elementary age) there a few times and they've always found something they like. They think the boys and girls bathrooms are cool too. In fact, one of the attractions of Phat is its funky, relaxed, 20-something atmosphere. Most of the staff sport artistically well-designed and executed tattoos that are a never-ending source of fascination for this 40-something. Check out Phat Burrito for great food.
