Located three miles from Uptown in trendy Plaza-Midwood, the VanLandingham Estate was practically in the boonies when it was built in 1913. Designed for a wealthy cotton broker and his family, the estate brought a bit of West Coast cache to the Southeast. Its California bungalow style of architecture stood in sharp contrast to the well-defined spaces of the Victorian homes that reigned in Fourth Ward and elsewhere along The Plaza.Now, nearly a century after the days when the streetcar rattled nearby, the restored stone-and-wood shingle house serves as the centerpiece for romantic weekends, weddings, receptions and corporate retreats. Nine guest rooms with period furnishings, a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, arched windows, wraparound stone porch and private garden tours add to enjoyment for B&B guests and other visitors. Those with business to attend to will be glad to know all rooms have high-speed Internet access. Both the home and the 65 gardens on the estate's five acres of land are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
