For years, South Charlotte diners have come to the Azteca on Woodlawn expecting to need a carry-out box for dinner leftovers. Most people just can't eat that much arroz con pollo in one sitting. All your molten cheese, meat and tomato favorites are here, along with different options such as enchiladas rancheros, chorizo burritos and garlic prawns. Azteca is a great place to create a scene on someone's birthday. The staff will sing to the birthday honoree in Spanish and English, make the birthday person wear a sombrero, and take a photo for lasting amusement value. Tall-backed booths, colorful inlaid tile tables and rock-ringed arches create a distinctive South-of-the-Border ambience.

Having lived in Austin, Tx and knowing the taste of Tex/Mex style Mexican food, I find Azteca to be one of the better I have eaten at in Charlotte, NC. However... what I don't understand is why "all" the Mexican restaurants in the Charlotte area DO NOT serve Mexican food with the taste that one can get out West? If you think there is not a difference, compare the two and you will ask the same question. I find that all the Mexican Restaurants in Charlotte basically serve Mexican food with the same taste. And by the way... don't even compare Mexican food prepared in Mexico with food prepared in Charlotte unless you are prepared for a BIG disappointment...
