Locals all have their favorite down-home-style spot, and Lupie's Cafe fans are legion. Ask folks what they like best at the place, and the answer isn't a dish -- it's a day, as in ''Thursday!'' Lupie's biggest sellers are served up as daily specials, just once each week. Folks drive from far and wide for ''their'' days, maybe savory meat loaf and mashers on Monday. To confirm what's on the menu, call ahead: Some things do change, even at Lupie's. What doesn't change much is the good-naturedly casual service, or the line of eager wannabe eaters. Black-and-white photographs provide simple decor surrounding chockablock tables. Think fast about a choice, and plan for mammoth portions with not a calorie spared. Can't decide? A veteran server votes for tender chicken and dumplings, or a chili-cheese dog if it's not dumpling day. Burger lovers say there is none bigger or better than Lupie's.
