Suppose your dad's 1965 rec room served food -- and beer -- and had waiters and waitresses with tattoos and piercings and thick sturdy Elvis Costello glasses. Suppose your friends thought it was cool to hang out there in the red vinyl booths and wood paneling with your dad and his working-class buds. Suppose the jukebox had something for everyone. Suppose it was the only place in town you could get a fried bologna sandwich or a veggie burger at 1AM. Just a dream? Not for Charlotte's evolving Plaza-Midwood neighborhood where toads are turned into princes and impossible things are happening every day. With one foot in the past and one in the future, The Penguin is full of contradictions, cheap drinks and killer eats. A former crumbling mid-century diner resurrected into the axis of hip, this restaurant/bar/hangout gives patrons what they want and what they didn't know they needed. Things you knew you wanted: burgers, barbecue, dogs, onion rings and banana pudding. Things you didn't know you needed (but you do): fried pickles, the Tupelo Special (that's peanut butter and bananas a la Elvis), sweet potato fries and a nice glass of Ferrari Carano Merlot.Pull up a stool at the small, but cozy bar, order a cold Schlitz, light up a cig and start making friends or grab your posse and secure a big booth for some serious hang time. Not feelin' social? Call in takeout and eat your barbecued beans and weenies over the kitchen sink. The Penguin feels like home either way -- is that your mama callin'?

the real deal

The Penguin is a small, neighborhood restaurant and bar with a workingman's vibe. It's smoky (I told you. don't complain), cozy, and has a great jukebox. The drinks are good but strong and the food is not healthy (although there are options- the black bean hummus is fantastic and the soups are legendary). For some going there is an indulgence - slumming on a cultural and culinary level. For everyone who doesn't have their head up their ass its a cool place with great food. The staff is more than willing to bend over backwards for the customer, unless the customer treats them like servants, not servers. In that case the customer stands the chance of being made uncomfortable. Its a busy place, so you have to be willing to go with the flow. If you have a tight, chapped ass I would suggest sparing yourself the trouble and staying in Southpark or Downtown. But if you want to relax, have a good time, listen to good music you won't hear most places, and appreciate a slice of decent humanity, this could be your place. Sit next to the guy with the tats and find out he's got a master's in comparative religion. Nice.

Guy rocks and hit the nose right on the head with his visit here. I love it!! I'd never heard of the place until Food Network did the show, and I've been here 11+ years. One of the best kept secrets in Charlotte. Gotta try the pimento cheese and fried pickles!

What's with the staff?

My experience was farcical. The bartenders with their tats thinking they are rock stars was comical. Why is that drop outs in life go to a tattoo shop and cover their bodies with tattoos and think they are the coolest humans on the planet? I guess an attitude comes with the toxic ink imbedded in their skin? Food decent, staff's faux personas, ludicrous.
