Catering to a crowd of young professionals, South Street Brewery is a long-standing icon of the downtown scene. While both its location (on South Street rather than on the Downtown Mall proper) and its conservative dcor render it not quite as prominent as some of the trendier new bistros popping up on Main Street, South Street Brewery continues to attract a loyal following. Consider it above the fray rather than out of the loop.Situated in a airy old warehouse, South Street maintains links to its heritage through the exposed brick walls, industrial-glass room dividers, and rough wood beams on the ceiling. However, unlike some ex-warehouse restaurants, it never feels run down or grimy. Instead, everything is crisp and tidy, as if every inch of the space is lovingly cared for each night. Custom-made wood booths and hostess stands take on a warm glow from the mellow orange walls surrounding the kitchen and the rice-paper lamps above each table. A massive Picasso-esque mural incorporating South Street themes covers the rear wall. The large brick fireplace features a stunning mission-style mirror on one side; on the other side, two blue couches face each other, creating a comfortable spot for cocktails. Another cozy ensemble of stuffed furniture can be found in the rear of the room. Come for dinner and stay for drinks, or vice versa. Kim Mattingly
