Spudnut Shop   

'Unusually Fresh Oh's (aka: donuts)' can be found in Charlottesville, VA. When my family moved here in the early 70's my father brought home a novel confection. He had each of us try one of the donughts in the box and try to guess what they were made of.... well the six of us gave our best guesses but we were far off the mark. 'Spud-nuts' he told us. Well, we were from the city and not one of us even knew what a 'spud' was though we knew what nuts were (since then I have learned we have many nuts on our family tree!). That day started a life long addiction to these wonderful fresh donuts. And a special relationship to Mr. Wingfield, the owner. When I was in my late teens our church ran a bus route for children in the Charlottesville area. Most of the kids didn't get to eat breakfast. Mr. Wingfield generously donated all of his 'leftover' donuts from his Saturday fixins. He gave these to us and we were able to feed the tummies and hearts of a lot of little kids. I wonder if he remembers doing this? He is such a big hearted man with a wonderful assortment of children of his own. Stop by and grab a few (or a dozen)and some great coffee. At lunch time they make some great sandwiches. They always make great friends.

Spudnuts are great. I often wonder how KK took over the glazed doughnut world while we still had spudnuts. Marketing. Hum. I might leave work and get one now!

There used to be a Spudnut shop in East Lansing, MI in the 60's when I was at Michigan State. I wonder was it a national franchise?
