Coup Devilles is wedged into that endearing little section of the Corner known as Elliewood Avenue. The eclectic, vine-covered mishmash of bars on this tiny street could have turned out to be a nightmare of poor urban planning; instead it wound up more like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Hopes are fulfilled or dashed each night as crush-ridden Wahoos congregate here to flirt, scope, and down fluorescently colored shooters. In the epicenter of this beer-goggled frenzy lies Coup Devilles, a two-room bar in an old house with an intimate outdoor patio.Coups is easy to miss if youre a newcomer, since its located in an English basement with a side entrance off the main street. Just look for the green awning that takes you down brick stairs to an alley, and youre there. Once inside, youll find tiled mosaic floors, polished wood tables, equestrian prints on the walls and a crowded little trolls lair bar. The green plastic patio tables outside are covered with blue-and-white checked table cloths and surround a miniature stone fountain. Small bands or acoustic duos play out on the patio almost every night, amplified as much by the magical setting as by the little PAs they bring with them. If you want to join in the fun, make sure you bring your ID with you the bouncer is a stickler for that sort of thing. Kim Mattingly
