The Buddha. That's what the regulars call this dinky little corner bar that's exploded into the hippest and most-cutting edge night spot in the city. There's not much to it (four small rooms, three small bars), the exotic furnishings look haphazardly placed on the walls and around the rooms, and the washrooms are a bit raggedy. But that constant line outside the club is no joke. The atmosphere at Funky Buddha Lounge is warm and intimate, and everybody wants to get in on the action. DJs spin just about everything that's hot, hip and happening, including classic soul, hip-hop, house, Latin, dance hall, and even a little New Wave. And who says Chicagoans don't have style? At The Buddha, the latest looks -- and not just those regurgitated from the magazines -- are on display here. Cocktail prices are steep, but this is a crowd that doesn't mind dropping a dime on a drink or two. The first room offers the longest bar, plenty of sofas to chill on and people-watch, and the DJ booth, which overlooks the club. Next door is the dance floor, which is way too small for the overflowing capacity, and another bar. Head further back for the VIP room, which caters to local movers and shakers and real celebrities, if you're looking for a little room to breathe. And speaking of breathing, one more room back is the non-smoking lounge, a sexy little space where you can hold a decent conversation and free up your lungs. If you're a smoker, don't even think about lighting up, because a staffer will immediately snatch the cigarette right out of your fingers. -- Audarshia Townsend

The Buddha

I really enjoy this place! I live in the far south suburbs and I have no beef about traveling to go there! The drinks are steep and the dance floor is small, but the crowd and vibe there is intimate and friendly. This is a great place, and I will come back again for sure!

Just Visiting...A Pleasant Surprise
By ry1207 on 01/05/2005
Recently in Chicago on business I was immediately directed to try The Funky Buddha. To my surprise I entered the building of this small quaint club that blew my mind away. If you like eclectic funky grooves and a even funkier laid back atmosphere then you are headed to the right place. Think Eryka Badu. This place heats up after midnight just when you are ready to get your party on. The service from the staff was great. They certainly know how to treat out of town guest. Many thanks to Bruno and Ralph.

I live out of state and it still doesnt stop me from driving to Chicago. Fell in love with the city and the Funky Buddha. Everyone has their own sense of style and the buddha welcomes everyones piece of individuality. Atmosphere is awesome and caters to everyone. Djs are awesome and keep me grooving all night. Staff is friendly and every experience has been a great one. ve seen celebrites there but the best thing is Funky Buddha makes you feel like one. Bex the V.i.p. Bartender is truly a STAR bartender indeed. Watch out for her cause she will make you never wanna leave. Shes awesome and does a great job representing exactly what every club needs....unique personality. She is definately the hottest bartender in Chicago!
