The Scoop: Not a typical department store, Barneys New York offers designer items in an upscale environment. The store, which carries everything from lip gloss to wedding gowns, prides itself on service and standards. A shoe department on the first floor provides shoppers with the latest styles, ones usually featured in all of the fashion magazines. Merchandise tends to be pricey, and as a result, clientele is limited to those who can afford to buy. This store also tends to attract the famous who visit Chicago, and shoppers can often spot those stars browsing or buying. The Scene: Because of its location, Barneys New York does attract many tourists. However, locals frequent this high-end department store to make their purchases. A multi-level store creates an open space with a large spiraling staircase in the center. Plenty of salespeople float about each department and are eager to assist customers.
