If you've never met live blues before, Blue Chicago -- and its nearby sister club, Blue Chicago on Ohio -- is one of your best first dates. You'll find local artists on stage, and paintings by local artists on the exposed-brick walls. The sound system is great and cover charges are always reasonable (best of all, one cover gets you into both clubs). Some of the city's finest female vocalists -- and there are many -- are mainstays at this friendly club, making it the best place to see such performers. Don't let the fact that it's a popular tourist spot steer you away -- they come for good reason. -- Martin A. Bartels

The problem with Chicago Blues clubs is that tourists go there to sit and watch. I'm used to blues clubs where people dance and have fun. Dead crowd, expensive covers, small or no dance floors, and bands asking for applause is not my idea of a great blues city.
