Linger over coffee with your lover here

The Lucky Platter is a cute little eclectic diner just south of downtown Evanston. I have been here twice, and both times were for breakfast, so I will base my review on the breakfast offerings. The first visit I tried their sourdough pancakes, which were OK, especially with the house specialty syrup which at that time was an orange honey flavour. The side of fruit that I shared with my breakfast companion was tasty and fresh and I felt was a good value for the money. My orange juice tasted fresh and very refreshing. My companion enjoyed her eggs benedict and commented favorably about the home fried potatoes that came with them. Second visit I had the Greek Omelet which was good, but I have had better in Greek Restaurants. I enjoyed the Peach Cheese pastry served on the side very much (I seriously considered getting another one to eat later), and I'd concur with the favorable opinion of the breakfast potatoes- being lightly pan-fried in butter and light seasoning redskins. My companion had a made-to-order egg white scramble that I sampled a bit of and it was delicious. Next time we go I want to try their Cinnamon Raisin French toast which looked sinfully delicious beckoning to me from the plate of another diner. Two things keep Lucky Platter from scoring a perfect 5-star rating: It is not unusual for a long wait for a table. The management can't do much about this, and actually it's a sign of a place with a bill of fare that is worth waiting for. The coffee served at Lucky Platter is poor, and is made worse when contrasted with the high quality of the other items on the menu. My advice to management would be to walk down to Peet's and get some decent beans and a grinder. Based on my two experiences, I think that you will enjoy a visit to the Lucky Platter. It's really intended to be a restaurant for two, or possibly two couples. Large groups are not easily seated and parents are encouraged to please take young children elsewhere as the dining area is just not set up to easily accommodate them.
