Rate and Write a Review Marshall Field (the store) was built in the 1880's by noted architect Henry Hobson Richardson. Today the block-long building on the Miracle Mile is synonymous with top-tier merchandise, exquisite presentation, attentive customer service, and an unquestioning return policy. But don't miss the luxurious details - the Tiffany Dome is the largest glass mosaic of its kind, and the Great Clock at the corner of State and Washington was memorialized by none other than Norman Rockwell.Marshall Field (the person) was born on a Massachusetts farm, climbed the ladder from stock boy to manager, and headed one of the world's leading emporiums. He catered to the city's elite by creating a shopping experience that went far beyond buying and selling of merchandise. He was the first to start bridal registry programs, and to open a dining room in a retail establishment.Speaking of food, Marshall Field's still offers a wide selection of eateries. Although today department store dining may be a quick chicken club sandwich, around the turn of the century, Chicago women could add a gentile luncheon to a host of other activities. Shoppers were encouraged to spend the day-- every day, if they so desired -- at Marshall Field. But entertainment for the rich and famous didn't end there. The store offered fashion shows, cooking classes, and even a lounge where travelers and other could send and receive telegrams, arrange hotel reservations, and perform other "concierge" functions. There was simply no reason to go anywhere else.So recapture some of the glory days of shopping by visiting Marshall Field's and wandering through the ground floor arcade. Perhaps you will be seduced by a "must have" trinket from a far-flung corner of the world. (Or maybe you'll just enjoy the sight of so much abundance with your hands firmly in your pockets.)Carla Mortensen Seen on Screen In 'Christmas Vacation,' John Hughes' gem of a flick about yuletide family disfunction, the incorrigible Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Chase) gets sidetracked from the task at hand -- namely, buying a present for his long-suffering wife (played by Beverly D'Angelo) -- by a comely salesperson and her wares.
