The first thing that catches your eye in West Loop bar Red Kiva is its ''sunken'' lounge area. Located at the front of the bar, it used to house the drum pit, where local musicians jammed when it was known as Rhythm. Now it's reserved more for posing than pounding, and usually filled with the area's scenesters taking in a few cocktails before they make their rounds about town. Red Kiva is proving itself more than just another upscale watering hole (Reserve, Victor Hotel and Fulton Lounge are neighbors), as it also showcases conversation-worthy work from some of the city's up-and-coming artists. For those who miss out on the sunken seats, the long bar is ideal for chatting it up with a new friend while sipping specialty cocktails. DJs crank out the usual variety from a balcony-like booth overlooking the room.
