Marc Bortz flips the script on his sprawling Lincoln Park nightclub once again. This time he partners with longtime club owner Ed Tunney (Club 720) and promoter Henry Cardenas (CMN Events), turning the former Biology Bar into something that aims to appeal to the masses. The 11,000-square-foot Republic features two dance floors as well as several unique lounge spaces. A large stage and state-of-the-art sound system allows for live concerts, but on most nights DJs will spin everything from hip-hop, rock, house and Latin fare. Republic is a far cry from the old Biology Bar (when the club's space resembled the inside of a science lab), as the decor has been replaced with more sophisticated accents. Five cozy living rooms are adorned with chocolate and cream leather booths, decadent chandeliers and custom soft-tone curtains. The interior also features zebra wood-paneled and mosaic-tiled walls, a noteworthy water-wall and 16 flat-screen TVs for displaying music videos.

REPUBLIC IS A NIGHTMARE!
By Alaina8492 on 07/27/2008
Republic was a NIGHTMARE...if you are looking for extremely rude and unprofessional people, maybe you would enjoy this place. I hosted a bachelorette party for some out of town friends, and I decided to give Republic a try for some dancing. The website allows you to book your bachelorette party online. I entered my credit card number thinking I was paying for VIP admission, one free drink for each girl, and a champagne toast for the bachelorette. I called the day of the reservation to confirm that they received the reservation. The lady on the phone informed me that they hadn't received it because their website was down, but that it was no big deal, she would just put my name on the list. When we got there, VIP admission did not exist, and the bouncer was extremely rude and NOT professional at all. This guy totally did not understand what it means to represent a professional establishment. He actually said to me "I can actually be very mean to you right now by not letting you in here." Once we made it past the crazy bouncer, the guy with the list was worse. He probably had about a 5th grade education, because he could not manage the list in front of him, he was all nervous and sweaty, and he didn't understand that we had purchased a bachelorette party package. I am not even sure that he spoke any English, because I would try to talk to him and then he would tell the cashier his answer and the cashier would then tell me. It was like I wasn't good enough for him to speak directly to me. I told him I wanted to speak to a manager and after about 30 minutes, they finally got the "hostess" down to speak to me (Jessica). She was somewhat professional, but spoke down to me and didn't make any apologies upfront. We did finally get our champagne toast and she sat us at a table. Once we were in, we realized the place was EMPTY and smelled like body odor! By then I was fuming and we just wanted to leave. We drank our champagne and took off. It is absolutely the WORST night club I have ever been to.
