It's smoky. It's small. And it's a little seedy. But this late-night Gold Coast club -- similar to New York's Blue Note Lounge -- showcases solid talent seven nights a week, 365 days a year. The artists, many of whom perform at the more mainstream venues like Green Dolphin Street and Jazz Showcase, come here to show off their creative sides, from avant garde to experimental excursions to bluesy beats. Guests pile in at the bar or squeeze into the tight booths and tables and listen intently to the duos, trios or quartets onstage, which sometimes include bar owner Lonie Walker or staffers. Underground's late hours also attract visiting celebrity musicians such as Steve Winwood, Mary J. Blige and D'Angelo, who've been known to jam with the band. -- Audarshia Townsend

Quite Simply: Wonderlicious!
By LJet Pro on 06/23/2008
I've been frequenting the UWB for 18 years, and it has never disappointed. You simply can't have a bad time at this Chicagoland treasure. This truly is Chicago's "Cheers" bar, where (if you've been there more than twice) everybody knows your name! Lonie Walker, Lorna Boston, Joe Thomas and all of the regulars give the most comprehensive mix of eclectic musicianship in the US--maybe even the world. The UWB will live on, no matter what spot it relocates to after it closes to make way for more "glass palaces."

I am From Chicago but moved to NYC and have had the opportunity to go into many clubs-and by FAR, the Wonderbar makes them all pale in comparison-top notch musicians, kind and funny staff-great atmosphere-it's like "Cheers" but with jaw- dropping talent and entertainment-I rue the day this local enigma closes its doors for more condos-shame on you Chicago, SHAME ON YOU!
