Nick's Fishmarket is a throwback to the way fine-dining establishments operated in the '60s and '70s. The upscale seafood supper club offers guests two dining options: Nick's Grill, a clubby-style, champagne lounge on the street level, and the lavish main dining room on the lower level. Downstairs, lunchers can watch the bustling action above ground in the Loop, and at night, an elaborate water fountain spurts out in Technicolor, adding a romantic touch to dinner. A draw for power lunches and high-profile gatherings, Nick's maintains its high regard for service, presentation and elegance, but the look blends contemporary elements with the classic. Settle into one of the buttery soft leather booths or one of the roomy tables. Understated artwork features nautical themes, and miniature chandeliers hover over every table. Classic dishes include a Dover sol, deboned tableside in a special butter sauce, Osso bucco-style swordfish and the ''Hawaiian Favorites,'' which are flown to the fish market daily. For lunch, specialties include the warm grilled chicken and lobster salad, roasted free range chicken and Nicole salad (Hawaiian Ahi tuna spring roll, grilled chicken breast, lemon tahini dressing). During the week, Nick's Grill attracts the area's young professionals who come for the daily happy hour with drink specials and complimentary hors d'oeuvres (Mon.-Thu. 5PM to 7PM). Nick's Fishmarket has additional locations in Rosemont and Boca Raton, Fla.

The food will make you sick...

My boyfriend and I visited Nick's for the first time during restuarant week in Chicago after reading all of the stellar reviews it has received. We were seated promptly and were delighted with the restuarant week menu. We both ordered the lobster bisque, had fish for dinner and different desserts as a part of the 3 course meal. The service went from ok to terrible and the food served to us was barely warm as the meal went on. By the time my boyfriend was into his entree he wasn't feeling well. We managed to get through part of our entree's (neither of us ate all of it) and when we got to dessert found that it was the best part of our meal. That was until, I found a long hair in my key lime pie. Even with the restuarant week menu, $100+ later, we were leaving feeling less then satisfied. By the time we got home, we barely got in the door before both of us were throwing up. We did call the restaurant manager to let them know, however received no additional customer service. We were told to call back if we felt worse. Needless to say, we will never be back. We frequently dine out and have enjoyed many of the local hot spots in the city. This my friends, is not one of them!

don't go during restaurant wee

I went to Nick's Fishmarket last Friday during Chicago Restaurant Week. It was disappointing. First we were relegated to the upstairs (apparently if you ask for the Chicago Restaurant Week menu you can't sit downstairs). The fish was raw, so we asked for it to be cooked through. We didn't get our first course and when we told the manager he gave us his card and said to mention it the next time we came and he would remember. The fish entres in the cafe were $20 - we paid 32$ for the entre and a desert. Was that a deal? I had been to the restaurant before and expected better. I won't rush back.

Terrible service

Had 7:30 reservations on a Friday - Place was nearly empty (only 7 tables full) We were not given a wine list until after we had ordered. My husband ordered oysters - he said they were not very good (I don't eat them). We waited a long time for our entrees (considering that the place was dead). The waiter brought me the wrong entree - but he knew what I had ordered. No apology - He went ahead and served my husband his meal. A few minutes later a different server told me that my entree was going to be a while. My husband went ahead and ate - cold fish isn't too appealing. Server asked if I wanted a glass of wine - I order Pinot Noir - don't know what I got but it was not Pinot Noir. ( tasted like the bottle had been open for a long time). 20 minutes later they brought my meal. Again, no apology - didn't offer to take anything off the tab either. This place must be very badly managed. Bottom line - don't bother. There are plenty of great restaurants in Chicago that will treat you right.

Wonderful experience

Nick's is my favorite restaurant in Chicago. I've had the abalone there, and it could not possibly have been any better. The service also was superb--the waiter was there when he was wanted, but he never intruded and was never overbearing. Dining at Nick's is really a memorable experience!
