The North Shore cohort to the Gold Coast eatery, Akai Hana makes up for what it lacks in flash with the freshest fish and classic Japanese fare. Even when the menu touts the usual, like ramen and chicken teriyaki, the quality is exceptional. Forty hot and cold appetizers make selections difficult, but you can't go wrong with deep-fried breaded oysters with plum sauce or delicate gyoza, light Japanese dumplings fill with minced meat. Combinations, served with miso soup, rice, cucumber and ice cream, are a smart choice when decisions are tough. For example, the sea bass or swordfish teriyaki is accompanied by a California roll and three pieces of sushi for an easy $16.50. Sushi sets, entrees and noodle dishes are just as nicely priced. Exceptional specials include skewers of giant clam in a butter sauce and pan-fried scallops served with a spicy mayo sauce. Plenty of vegetarian options make Akai Hana a winning experience for all. -- Jacky Runice

Dirty, overpriced, and poor service. I cant think of one reason to eat here. There are so many sushi restaurants to choose from def pass on this one. Seven bucks for a little seaweed salad? How do they get away with it?

I have been going to Akai Hana for years. As a matter of fact I was just there last night. Not one drop of ambience to be found, but the best sushi around. What more could a person ask for? Fish is very fresh and they give you ample sized pieces. We normally get one of the platters because economically it works out better than ordering pieces a la carte. Service is always fast and friendly. My son says the Miso soup is the best anywhere and the ginger dressing on their salad is awesome. Try the Mochi ice cream too. You can purchase the ice cream, dressing and a variety of other asian foods and gifts at the grocery store next door. I can't say enough about this place!
