A little worn yet well loved, this legendary jazz joint continues to take on the local music giants with its specialized blend of music. Andy's, known best for its 'Jazz at Noon' event, is one of the few places downtown for jazz aficionados to go for the rarer forms of jazz music, including be-bop, straight ahead and big band. Established in 1951, the club is smoky and intimate, with an atmosphere that feels like one of those old-timer's taverns. But unlike some of those dreary clubs of yesteryear, Andy's is cheery and full of energy, offering daily specials. 'Jazz at Noon's' popularity spawned 'Jazz at 5,' an after-work event with live music and drink specials. Immediately following is 'Jazz at 9,' an event designed for couples and late-night revelers. The full-service kitchen cranks out classic Chicago dishes, from roast prime rib of beef to grilled Atlantic salmon to steaks. Lighter fare includes burgers, sandwiches and pizzas.

Worse than "poor."

"a dog by any other name..." I too agree that this club would be better off listing itself as a "social" club and not "jazz." For anyone to be able to go and listen to jazz players trying to drown out the noisiness of the audience--I'd say skip the live performance and get a group of friends together and play your favorite cds. You'll have just as good a time. Why they bother to invite talented--well known (and local) to play here is a mystery to me. The audience certainly isn't coming to appreciate their artistry. Thankfully there are such venues in town that do respect the music and the musician--Green Mill & Jazz Showcase for starters... Be sure to check them out if you're interested in enjoying the music.

Obviously this has everything all wrong to begin with. Andys is located at 11 E. Hubbard street.. And that last review hasnt been to andys in who knows how long because i go to andys at least 3 times a week and will say there is some conversations going on during the show. This is an atmosphere that allows that and everyone who knows andys knows this. And FYI the new showcase of Andys Jr. as i like to call it is starting to turn into the same thing. Joe totally remade and andys and i think andys should take that as a complement... Cheers to Andys and keep bringing the best jazz that Chicago has to offer...

More of a social club
By Iluvbernie on 07/10/2008
Although Andy's provides some outstanding musicians, the two times I visited this club I was not able to enjoy it because of the loud conversations going on all around me. When I spend my hard earned money to go out and listen to jazz, that's what I want to do - not listen to the other patrons conversations, which can be overbearing. The first time I visited this club I complained about the excessive noise and the woman at the door suggested I go the the Jazz Showcase where the serious jazz lovers go - and that is exactly what I did. While the Showcase was closed, I tried Andy's again but the result was the same - too much conversation and not a lot of listening to music. I sure did miss Joe Siegle telling someone to be quiet or shut off their cell phone or to pull up their pants. Thank God they are open again.

This is Chicago Jazz, baby

Music that comes from the soul won't be served up in a Bennigan's atmosphere. I've been gone from the city a few years and was just making plans for my next visit when I saw these reviews. If you want some of the best, real music Chicago style and a good drink and great food, this is THE place.
