This traditional Indian eatery, known best for its bountiful vegetarian buffet, promises that even the most hardcore carnivore won't miss meat. Arya Bhavan, in the heart of the largest concentration of Indian restaurants in the city on Devon Avenue, is not only a popular haunt in this area, but at the annual Taste of Chicago as well. Though it's not the swankiest place around, the moderately priced restaurant strives to offer guests a pleasant dining experience with cuisine from North and South India. Those familiar with Indian food will relish in the always freshly prepared dosa (crepes), uttappam (pancakes) and vada (golden fried lentil dumpling) that are filled with potatoes and onions, tomatoes and peas, or hot chilies. Delve a little deeper into the buffet for more traditional offerings as the daily rotating menu also features heartier selections. North India selections include Bengan Bhartha (smoked eggplant mashed and cooked with spices) and vegetable vindaloo (mixed vegetables and potatoes cooked in a spiced tangy gravy), while avial (garden-fresh vegetables in a gravy of coconut, curd and green chilies) is one of the more popular South Indian dishes. Also, call ahead to find out if they're serving the ''Indian Sloppy Joe,'' which contains chopped spicy vegetables served on a bun.
