Atomix holds its own against the encroaching chains, thanks to a diehard clientele of Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village writers, artists, graphic designers, musicians and indie-minded yuppies. How old-school is Atomix? It still allows smoking, in the back area, although the non-smoking front section is slightly larger (even hipsters look after their health these days). Sure, you'll pay a dime or two more for your drink of choice than at the local Starbucks. But you can get a laugh out of the staff's ever-changing comic strip on the front counter, and who knows, you also might get to talk movies with one of the local indie film critics who hang out here. Atomix is exactly what an indie coffeeshop should be.
