Carol's is a true country bar, a largely unknown piece of the eclectic fabric of Chicago. Located on a corner of Clark Street in Uptown, half a mile south of the lively Andersonville Clark Street strip, stepping into Carol's is almost like stepping into the past.Longtime residents who have been coming to Carol's for years mix with newer residents and some younger thrill-seekers at the bar, where the beer is cheap and cowboy boots and hats are plentiful. Tempers sometimes flare by the end of the long nights at Carol's, as would be expected in a joint like this, but overall the smart-mouthed bar tenders and regulars are friendly and talkative with newcomers and old-timers alike. There is live country and bluegrass music on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and occasional open mic nights. The beer is cheap -- 50 cents on Mondays and $1.75 other days; $2.75 when the band is playing. The bar stays open later than most others in the area: 2AM Mondays and Tuesdays, 4AM Wednesday through Sunday but 5AM on Saturdays. Decent fried bar food is also available, and there is never a cover charge.--Kari Lydersen

karaoke is not the bomb.
By crapvespa on 01/24/2005
First, anyone who calls something 'the bomb' without a hint of sarcasm probably has questionable taste. Anyway, the karaoke isn't bad, but it doesn't really belong at Carol's. Its a country bar, a HILLBILLY bar and 21 year old hipsters singing Sir Mix A Lot just doesn't sit right with me, when I want to hear David Frizzell and sip a frosty mug o' Old Style. As for the band, they KNOW alot of songs, and they are VERY good, but in the end, they are just a cover band... Perfect, however, for the busy friday and saturday nights when the posers mix with the regulars and hilarity ensues... I'm not knocking it-- even when packed to the gills with people in yuppie gear who don't know George Jones from George Strait, the interaction is always fun. Off nights are much better suited to finding out what the place is really about, with grizzled hillbillys downing $.75 drafts and $4 pitchers on mondays, and the amazing selection of country from the 50s to the 90s on the jukebox.
