This flashy, Pan Asian-influenced eatery aims to glam up Chicago's thriving dining scene. Known as a hangout for celebrities and socialites, China Grill (with additional locations in South Beach, Orlando, Las Vegas and New York) takes up residence in the Hard Rock Hotel. For the health-conscious foodie, the dishes here are guilt-free as everything is prepared on the grill or in a Wok. And surprisingly, China Grill cranks out generous portions -- not those tiny trendy plates similar restaurants tend to send out. Popular starters include tangy lamb spareribs, lobster pancakes or the Kobe beef carpaccio. Salad lovers should spring for the Confucius chicken salad with sesame oil vinaigrette or the Peking duck salad roasted with tangerine orange sauce. Signature entrees include pan-seared spicy tuna (with avocado sashimi and wakame), Shanghai lobster (with ginger, curry and crispy spinach), sizzling whole fish with Chinese black bean and red chili sauce, or a grilled 30-ounce porterhouse steak with roasted garlic and shallots. If there's room for dessert, delight in the house specialty: Bananas in a Box (caramelized bananas, caramel ice cream).

SERVICE WAS DISSAPOINTING. WE RECIEVED THE MAIN ENTREE,AND HAD TO WAIT FOR THE DINNER PLATES TO PUT IT ON. SERVICE WAS VERY SLOW TO REMOVE THE ALREADY FINISHED DISHES. MAIN ENTREE HAD TO BE SENT BACK TO BE REHEATED. NO EXCUSES, AS THE ROOM WAS NOT BUSY. WE WOULD NOT RECOMEND, OR RETURN.

Amazing
By sh8dyslim4 on 12/24/2004
Did these reviewers LISTEN to the concept of CHINA GRILL? I think not. The attentive wait staff pointed out to us that all the dishes are served "family style" on platters and are meant to be shared. (kind of like Buca di beppo) So I hardly think these prices are high for each entree feeding 3-4 people. The food is amazing. We stated with the Kobe Beef Tartar , which I thought was great. We also had the Tempura Sashimi (with a exquisite Champagne Mustard Sauce. The salads were HUGE and fed four of us for about 15 bux. The main courses were all amazing....especially the beef dishes. The deserts are works of art that put that lame place called SUGAR to shame. And all the deserts are under 10 bux too! The staff was friendly and attentive w/out being pushy. I have been for lunch and dinner and the Lunch staff know how to time a quick lunch but still give grade A service. Welcome to chicago...Ill be back!

WHY
By sovietfrance on 11/12/2004
I went for lunch with four other people. The three hosts appeared to be there to be catty and snobby. We asked for a different table so we could be closer to the kitchen.By her responce you would have thought we asked her for the world. She huffed and said she would have to place a 5th place at the table. We said "okay, we'll wait" she shrugged her shoulders and set the table. Gee thanks, your a pal. The up sell was right away. We asked for one bottle of water, they brought two. When we said we don't want two, they were angry and whipped the bottle off the table. The waiter was friendly when he stopped buy. Explained the menu and then told us what we should try. The spinach side he highly recomended was a pile of greasy fried spinach that... well, blew big time. The other dishes we ordered were so-so but nicely presented. The service was good but a bit too much with the constant nagging of asking if we needed more of anything. Everytime, no matter how many times you walked by the hosts at the door they said good by with that dry we really don't care smile. I walked by 4 times to smoke at the bar or use the rest room and each time they said good bye, thanks... I wanted to hit them. Our tab was over $300 with NO drinks, just two coffes besides one bottle of water. JOKE!!! Dessert was okay. The banana in a box was more to break your teeth on the sugar box than to eat, bannnas had way to much cinnamon. I normaly don't say bads things about a place but at these prices, ya have to. This isn't our dinning stlye nor the economic times for this style of dinning in Chicago. Limelight in dinning is what this place is. I don't see it working here. Go to Oprea. This place blows.
