Chicago prides itself on its improvisational comedy -- and with good reason. You can always count on someone being on-stage, somewhere, just making it up as they go along and doing all for laughs. Comedysportz is one of the core companies doing this in Chicago. In the summer of 2000, it moved into this newly renovated 200-seat theater that is fully heated and air-conditioned with an adjacent parking lot. The show that gives the theater its name is a lively comedy competition where two teams do improvisation based on audience suggestions but the difference is that here there is a referee, penalties and a point system. The theater hosts a variety of other improvised shows as well. Nevertheless, no matter what production you see, you can rest assured that each time you go you'll see something new and different. All shows have a B.Y.O.B. policy as the theatre serves no refreshments. -- Jenn Q. Goddu

Laughs all around

The new theatre is amazing and it's in such a great location. I love their ComedySportz shows because they are full of energy and the comedy is smart. The late night shows are awesome too because, let's face it, who can resist dirty comedy. I love the bar that's at the theatre because its a fun place to hang after the shows.

This is the most consistently funny improv I've seen in Chicago. Every show has been fun and different. When my parents are in town I know I can take them here or I can bring a date and everyone will laugh but no one will be offended. They keep all of their material clean (and penalize you with a brown paper bag over your head if you don't) but its also smarter than the typical sex, race, and gay jokes you see at iO. NOTE: The info that is listed is at least 2 years old. I just saw ComedySportz at their new space on Belmont by the el. Its a huge upgrade from the place on Halsted. The new one looks like you could be in the ESPN Zone but with a stage. BIG NOTE: They are not BYOB anymore, but the bar is great and the bartenders have always been friendly.
