When The Duke was born in 1989, its Scottish owners stuffed it full of antique furniture and artifacts from their motherland, the city's largest collection of single-malt whiskeys, and not much else. Why? Without televisions, dartboards or pool tables, the lack of outside stimulants forces patrons to socialize (if you're desperate for an ice-breaker, the stuffed deer head behind the bar donning a constable's hat is a great catalyst). The food here is really good, too: favorites include the macaroni and cheese fritters, root-vegetable-and-mustard-seed stew, salmon and cod cakes, burgers, and the all-you-can-eat fish 'n chips on Wednesdays and Fridays (regulars clamor for the cod fried in Tennant's Lager beer and thick cut potatoes). Eat inside by the fireplace to stay warm in the winter or, if Mother Nature is behaving, head outside to the beer garden. Whether you stop in for a snifter, a snack or a serving of Scottish hospitality, The Duke won't let you down.
