The Buddha. That's what the regulars call this dinky little corner bar that's exploded into the hippest and most-cutting edge night spot in the city. There's not much to it (four small rooms, three small bars), the exotic furnishings look haphazardly placed on the walls and around the rooms, and the washrooms are a bit raggedy. But that constant line outside the club is no joke. The atmosphere at Funky Buddha Lounge is warm and intimate, and everybody wants to get in on the action. DJs spin just about everything that's hot, hip and happening, including classic soul, hip-hop, house, Latin, dance hall, and even a little New Wave. And who says Chicagoans don't have style? At The Buddha, the latest looks -- and not just those regurgitated from the magazines -- are on display here. Cocktail prices are steep, but this is a crowd that doesn't mind dropping a dime on a drink or two. The first room offers the longest bar, plenty of sofas to chill on and people-watch, and the DJ booth, which overlooks the club. Next door is the dance floor, which is way too small for the overflowing capacity, and another bar. Head further back for the VIP room, which caters to local movers and shakers and real celebrities, if you're looking for a little room to breathe. And speaking of breathing, one more room back is the non-smoking lounge, a sexy little space where you can hold a decent conversation and free up your lungs. If you're a smoker, don't even think about lighting up, because a staffer will immediately snatch the cigarette right out of your fingers. -- Audarshia Townsend

Let's get Funky!

Funky Buddha is cool. It has good hip-hop music but the place is a little small. It's a spot to go to first and then walk to Redno, the after hour club ;-), which is right around the corner! Lillian T

This is one of the best bars/clubs that I have ever been to..yes, it is small but that is what makes it so intimate...never have been there solo....however, single or not you are going to have a great time or you just dont like good music and good people....everytime I return to the "Chi" this is where I will be!!!!

Terrible - Negative 5 stars

Extremely overcrowded and overpriced, but the worst bouncers in Chicago by far. With as crowded as it was one Saturday evening I stepped on a guys foot by accident and barely able to move I was pushed into him merely by the number of shoulders surrounding me. The guy was pssed, obviously irritated, grabbed me by the throat and slowly dragged me outside as I tried my best to get his hand off my neck. He finally ended the scuffle and let go of my throat outside. And then a bouncer let him back in the club! Immediately I complained to management as I was scraped up and bloody, it turned out the guy typically worked there as a bouncer. Interestingly enough, he was not wearing the t-shirt that every other bouncer was, so he was certainly there on his own accord. This incident was handled by the manager in an even worse fashion, as at the time the club was crowded wall-to-wall and there was a line outside two blocks long. They likely had more to worry about, but only wanted to state that he was a bouncer "on duty" that felt threatened. Keep in mind this bouncer was twice my size, easily 6'-6" and 300 lbs. The incident and the way it was handled made my visit by far the worst club experience I have ever had. Easily I could have pressed charges, but there are more important things to do in this life and visiting this club again will not be one of them.
