Who needs frills when you've got this downscaled spot serving authentic Cuban fare? Habana Libre, in a growing part of West Town, complements the area's burgeoning restaurant/lounge row in an atmosphere that feels like it's right out of Miami Beach. The tiny dining room is usually peppered with those of Latin descent speaking more than a few Spanish dialects. But regardless from whence they hail, they come for the moderately priced cuisine that highlights the best of Cuba. Starters included the platano maduro fritos, or fried sweet plaintains; Cuban-style tamale with ham and cheese; and shrimp cerviche with onion, tomatoes, cilantro and avocado. Be prepared to take home a doggie bag as Havana Libre serves up heaving portions of classic Latin dishes such as Cuban chicken rice, red snapper with garlic sauce and veggies, and shredded beef in a homemade tomato sauce. There's also a number of sandwiches on the menu, including a classic Cuban sandwich with ham, pork and Swiss cheese, and the Jibarito, steak served with tomatoes, grilled onions and lettuce between two big plantains.
