An Evanston icon continues to keep diners on the North Shore sauced up with its special, slow-cooked barbecue entrees. Owned by Hecky Powell, who opened the spacious, shack-style spot in 1983 with only $100, Hecky's has grown into a successful business mostly due to its famous, tangy sauce. Additionally, his Creole mother comes from New Orleans, and Hecky has incorporated her recipes into his menu with sides such as the Lyonnaise potatoes, baked beans and jumbo fried shrimp from the Gulf. The inexpensive dishes, from the giant turkey leg to a full rack of ribs with meat falling off the bone, are a draw for Northwestern University students and area families. Other big sellers include the crunchy fried chicken, char-grilled burgers and Buffalo wings. A Chicago outpost opened at Halsted & Division streets in 2004.

Hecky's Is Spectacular
By Kingndi on 07/25/2008
Hecky's ribs are a thing of beauty, and the tangy sauce is to die for. I love the slice of white bread they serve with the ribs (dipping in the sauce is awesome) and their fries. Their side dishes are delicious, too. My mouthy waters just thinking about a full slab of Hecky's baby backs. YUM!!

Great sauce, but the ribs are way too fatty.

BEST EVER

Overall, I would give Hecky's ten stars, if I could! Excellent, high-quality slowly-smoked, low-fat, tender ribs, amazing sauce, other amazing entrees, amazing sides....and Hecky's friendly smile and outstanding service to the local community. The only place that could compete at all, a few years back at least, was Robinson's in Lincoln Park. The meat was VERY SLIGHTLY better.......their baby backs were of SLIGHTLY higher quality, but Hecky's sauce has them ALL beat for sure!
