North America's oldest continuously running hotel, the Palmer House is a Chicago landmark. Opened in 1871, the hotel was destroyed 13 days later in the Chicago Fire. Despite its inauspicious start, the hotel has become a symbol of traditional elegance, while offering its guests contemporary conveniences. The hotel lobby ceiling is the Sistine Chapel of hotels, featuring individual oil paintings of figures from Greek mythology. The rooms themselves are less dramatic, but still comfortable. Though the Palmer House is walking distance from Chicago's theater district, shopping and restaurants, it would be easy to remain within its opulent confines. The fitness center is impressive and includes rows of cardio equipment, an indoor pool, a steam room, a sauna and a virtual reality golf with pro shop. There are several restaurants as well as a cigar bar on site, and the hotel's lower level contains a shopping arcade. Despite its lavish digs, pets are welcome and greeted with water dish and toys. -- Claire George
