The long-awaited French/Japanese fusion effort from the Mirai Sushi founder Miae Lim and Rick Wahlstedt of Le Colonial has arrived. The trendy River North space lives up to its billing with two expansive dining rooms decorated in a '70s art-deco-meets-Far-East theme, complete with leather backless chairs and palm trees. Until the weather turns unpleasant, diners can sit on the canopied deck at river walk level and watch boats sail by on the Chicago River. The cuisine by Chefs Jun Ichikawa (Mirai Sushi) and Gene Kato (Ohba) is full of sushi and European cuisune fusion. Specialties include: "Le Quack Japonais," a smoked duck with hoisin sauce, mango chutney and mushu wraps presented whole at the table, then carved back in the kitchen; A 7-spice Kobe beef prime rib in hollandaise sauce; and "The Rock," a thin-sliced New York strip cooked and presented on hot rocks. For the less adventurous, there's surf and turf and baked king crab. For starters, try the Yaki Yaki, sauteed shrimp, squid and asparagus in a special sake garlic sauce or pan-seared lump crab cakes with soy mustard sauce; Japonais also offers a full selection of maki rolls, sushi, sashimi and daily fish specials if you want your Japanese a bit less fused.

The best hands down

How Japonais is second to Tsunami is beyond me. I live at 1155 dearborn (across from Tsunami) and I still would rather dine at Japonais. The food is to die for, some very creative rolls, and very large fresh portions of sashimi. The staff is always courteous unlike others named in this column. There's a reason Japonais did over 17 mil this year. This is the place all others need to take a lesson from.

A delight

Unique atmosphere, excellent specials and among the best sushi in the Midwest. Each item seems better the the one before. The tapas serving style adds to the overall experience! "The Rock" is a must have.

Delicious, and enjoyable

Excellent food and atmosphere. Numerous items to choose from. Wait staff very professional and helpful with choices. We were very pleased with all of our selections ($>400.00 tab for 2). Only one disappoinment: Chopsticks need major upgrade. Not like those provided at Catch 35 or other high end sushi venues. Our waiter stated she had never had a complaint about the chopsticks (very surprising). We asked for the To Go chopsticks, which were an improvement to those provided with dinner. (or bring your own).
