Awesome View! Bad Food!
By margolis2008 on 12/23/2007
Located on the 70th floor of a residential building. Chose it, because we were looking for a great view. It has that. That is ALL it has. Got off the elevator. Greeted by a hostess who asked us for our reservation and led us to the dining room were 2 other couples were dining. There is a reason this place was empty on a Saturday night on a holiday weekend! This place has gone from a Chicago institution to a Chicago shame. We were seated at the WORST table in the room. Why, on earth, would she seat us at the worst possible table when there were dozens open? Our location allowed us to enjoy the rantings of several rather loud waitstaff, instead of the romantic conversation we sought. Checked my coat w/ the rather insistent hostess. Waiter took our drink order. I ordered an Appletini. Brought me a Peartini. Not that it mattered, since it was so watered down. Brought over a complimentary tuna tartar after we ordered. It was tasty. Guy came by w/ a bread tray and asked us what kind we wanted. Plopped down a piece of bread the size of a half dollar. That was all we got in the bread department. The upside is he helped us low carb it for the evening. The downside is that he made us resentful of their obvious choice to short-change their customers. At their prices, they should offer a bread basket or, at least, have the guy come around again. We both ordered lobster bisque. They gave us carp soup. If there was a drop of lobster in that swill, I'll eat your hat, which would probably taste better. It was fishy smelling and tasting, and didn't, in the least bit, resemble lobster bisque. I actually spit out the chunk of "lobster," because it tasted like spoiled fish. Neither of us touched our soup. They took away our bowls without asking why we hadn't eaten it. Staff VERY inattentive, especially considering the "crowd" only grew to 4 couples. Next came my raw duck and his undercooked salmon. Time to go. Handed the hostess my coat claim. She informed us she had to ride down with us to the deserted 68th floor unlocked closet for my $2000 fur. Wow! Needless to say, we will NOT be returning. We ignored the bad reviews around the Internet, because there were a couple of good ones. Now, we wonder if those were self-reviews. This place is truly terrible! Please, save yourself the heartache and expense. Chicago is chock full of great restaurants. This place ain't one of them. My question is, "What could make a place go downhill so quickly and so far downhill?" The final insult was our $29 tab for valet parking for the one hour we were inside. Chicago valet is pricey, but come on!

View only good thing!

While on a business trip to Chicago a group of us decided to visit the "famous" Cite. We had reservations made by the Conciege. We were ready for a dining experience. It was an experience to say the least. The server was not customer "friendly", when one of our party asked about the house wine, he minimize the name and description as though we would not understand what he was saying, not a good thing, when the person asking is a "wine expert". The attention span of the server was limited, I would diagnosis him as ADD; why, he was more interested in talking to the people passing him that were being seated and attending to our needs. We ordered appetizers, but being a General Manager of an "upscale" resturant in Southern Indiana, we decided we didn't like anything about the place but the view. That was exceptional. Wait staff, not fit to take orders from residents at the Chicago Zoo. We left before the appetizers arrived. We offered to pay for them, but once they mistake had been mentioned to the floor manager, he insisted it be comp'd. Sorry, I will have consider long and hard about return there again.
