Elephant & Castle   

The first Chicago appearance of this growing Canadian chain (there are 23 in all, including outposts in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Boston and San Diego) has settled squarely in the Financial District. The red telephone booth in front isn't the only authentic touch -- the decor is a fair representation of what you'd find abroad -- but the pubiness certainly isn't sacrosanct. There's a handful of recognizable British pub dishes, like Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash and Shepherd's Pie, but you'll also find pasta dishes, salmon and, in a bow to the restaurant's newest host city, a few carefully selected steaks. -- Jorge Just
