Thank your deity you needn't travel the 33 miles through the Hindu Kush mountain range that connects Kabul and Peshawar to get to this Khyber Pass, an inexpensive Oak Park eatery featuring fragrant dishes of the subcontinent. Appetizing bread selections include Peshawari nan, a light bread with poppy seeds, baked in a tandoori oven, after which you can try the samosas, patties filled with delicately spiced potatoes and green peas. If you can't decide, order the assorted Khyber snacks, a platter of vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections that serves two to three for $5.50. Popeye would give up Olive Oyl for a shot of saag paneer -- spinach cooked with onions, tomatoes and homemade cheese. For a group of four to five, there's a whole leg of baby lamb marinated in yogurt, vinegar, garlic and Indian spices, then roasted in the tandoori oven. Cool any hot pipes with a Flying Horse or Kingfisher beer. - Jacky Runice

Yuck!
By rjtales on 04/16/2007
Going to Khyber Pass when you're craving Indian food is like seeking sex with someone you find utterly unattractive, but who you know has a huge, unrequited crush on you. It's easy to get and convenient, but far from the best you can do. Khyber Pass is certainly a step up from McDonald's, yet it's the McDonald's of the Indian food world. The buffet is agonizingly predictable as the dishes never change, and the dishes strike me as being dumbed down to pander to American palates. Plus, when I ordered the Gosht Biryani off the menu, it arrived at my table with a live fly in it! Instead of offering a refund or to remake it, or even apologizing, the waiter just brushed the fly out and served it to us anyway! Yuck! Spare your wallet and your taste buds and go to Sri Ganesh at 837 E. Roosevelt Rd. in Lombard, IL for some real Indian cuisine. The cuisine there is vegetarian, but you really don't notice because it's flawlessly seasoned and filling to boot. The waiter is extraordinarily friendly and he will even steer you in the right direction with what dishes you should try. Trust his judgement! Everything he's suggested to me thus far has been beyond delicious!
