You'll feel like you stepped back in time upon entering this classic ice-cream parlor that's been around since 1921. The family-owned business still has trinkets from the old days, including family photos, miniature jukeboxes and signs. But the main attraction is the ice cream, homemade and hand-packed. Open year round, longtime customers and the newly gentrified Bucktown community come out for hefty portions of banana splits, sundaes, shakes and other fountain creations. For $35, customers can eat the largest turtle sundae. For $50, you and some friends -- and some homeless people -- can snack on the Royal George. Named after Margie's grandson, it consists of 25 scoops of ice cream and everything in the store from English toffee to fudge to strawberries, bananas and much more. The little place offers plenty of seats, including several roomy, Formica booths lining the walls. Classic tunes, from the Andrew Sisters to Elvis, set an old-fashioned atmosphere. Margie's also serves diner food like burgers and fries, as well as homemade candies and chocolates.

AWFUL
By RWMKBAR on 06/16/2009
I went there last night with my family. We didn't finish our ice cream, because it just wasn't good. The ice cream is not a quality ice cream. The hot fudge tasted good, but wasn't warm. We had an Indian family sitting in the next booth, eating McDonald's, even thought there is a sign posted no outside food. We waited 30 min to be seated and it was not worth the wait. We would never go back. I was very disappointed.

The Best of The Best

I went to visit my son and his fiancee about 2 years ago and had my first visit to Margie's. Oh, my Lord! It was the best ice cream I had eaten in a very long time. Loved the atmosphere, also, and the staff is very friendly. We'll be heading back to Chicago next month (November) to attend our son's wedding. The one place I intend on re-visiting is Margie's Candies. I'm going to walk in that door and order the biggest sundae they have. Margie's is definitely the best place for dessert. If you live in Chicago and haven't visited Margie's at least once, you don't know what you are missing out on. Go! You'll be glad you did!

Margie's is like an old Friend

Oh dear, if the hot fuge is coming out of packets heated in the microwave, Margie is rolling over in her grave. Use to work in the bank that owns the building and I would go to a late lunch and chat with Margie. She was there when that strange British group the of 60's ... The Beatles came in and had one of those wonderful HUGE sundays. She loved the photo of then in the shop. I was there about 6 months ago and things seemed much the same. Sents some out of town friends there for a late night ice cream and they loved it. OH, and "no sprinkles" get a grip.

The Best

My granddaughter is the 5th generation of my family to eat ice cream at Margie's. And we all love it. You have to experience a trip to Margie's. Only then will you understand why generation after generation go there and practically lick the bowls clean!! When I was a child, we used to watch Margie roll the handmade chocolates--she is missed. But her family has done her proud. When in Chicago, do find the time to enjoy a trip to Margie's.
