Located just north of the well-known Belmont drag of tattoo shops, alternative clothing stores, sex toy and exotica boutiques, and hip thrift shops catering to alterna-kids and alterna-yuppies, Pick Me Up is a popular and comfortable coffee shop for late-night or afternoon java sessions. The crowd is mostly 20-somethings and teenagers -- many with '80s punk hairstyles, sporting leather and studs -- along with older proudly eccentric regulars. The decor is retro and fun, with lots of old signs and artifacts from the '50s, '60s and '70s lining the walls and counters. It's a good place to kill time, either reading by yourself or having deep philosophical discussions with friends until closing time hits at 3AM.

Okay, I really liked it. Some of the other reviewers seemed to think this place wasn't quite punk enough or something, but I didn't see that as the vibe they were going for. The server was ridiculously sweet to us, and we sat there for at least 3 hours just talking after dinner. She kept checking on us and refilling our water the whole time. Great vegan options, obviously, and more than that the staff was savvy enough to know that if someone orders a burrito with no cheese or sour cream, you should probably bring out the vegan margarine instead of the butter. This may seem obvious, but trust me it's not so common. I had an awesome burrito and a vegan chocolate strawberry shake. Yum.

WAY TOO TRENDY, IT'S NOT THE PUNKS AND ARTISTS WHO GO HERE, IT'S THE RICH (PARENTS TO THANK) SUBURBAN TURNED CHICAGOAN LOSERS WHO GO HERE. STAY HOME, DRINK WATER, AND WATCH MALLRATS. IT'S MUCH BETTER THAT WAY.

Cool funky decor, food sort of bland but still worth checking out.
