Portillo's Hot Dogs   

Trying to name Chicago's best hot dog is like trying to name the city's best deep dish -- there are plenty of contenders complete with fiercely loyal supporters. But Portillo's is definitely one of the city's top dogs. In 1963 Dick Portillo opened his first hot dog stand, The Dog House, in Villa Park. The small venue expanded in 1967, becoming Portillo's, which now has 23 locations throughout Chicagoland. Assembled before your eyes, the 'bun'derful hot dog creations are topped with cucumbers, relish, onions, tomatoes, peppers, mustard and a large pickle. Order the jumbo if you're looking for a full meal and don't forget to load up on napkins. Besides hot dogs, the menu also includes exceptional burgers, chicken sandwiches, ribs and Italian beef. That's in addition to thick shakes, hulking onion rings and some of the best french fries around. Unsatisfied with a simple hot dog empire, Portillo has also paired his signature eatery with Barnelli's, a salad, pizza and pasta joint. Eight locations feature the Portillo's/Barnelli's combination, and more are in the works.
