Greasy spoons and hole-in-the-wall taco or pizza joints aren't the only place you can satisfy those late night hunger pains. Tempo Cafe is a smart looking eatery in the heart of downtown Chicago that's open 24 hours a day -- so expect a long line after the bars close along Rush and Division. Inside the bright, airy dining room, honey-colored wood meets leather booths. In warm weather you can eat outside on a sidewalk patio lined with flower boxes. Tempo was once a coffee shop, but the Kontos family has expanded into a full-fledged cafe, featuring a menu of salads, light entrees, sandwiches (classic or deluxe), stir-fries, and seafood, meat and pasta dinners. But it's the breakfast foods that get the royal treatment here. The waffles, pancakes or french toast are made fresh, and there are more than 25 three-egg omelets to select from. Want to be loyal to Chicago? Try the State Street omelet with broccoli, ham, mushroom and tomato.

Love the Tempo of Tempo
By RENROD59 on 04/01/2009
I used to have breakfast here years ago when it was across the street. It was host to many a late night odyssey for myself and my crew after a night of carousing on the town and being open 24 hours I watched many a sunrise over my bacon and mozzarella omelette. I was pleasantly surprised when I returned after a 10 year plus absence (sober of course ) to find the same great fluffy omelettes and thick slices of greek toast. Others in my party ordered the pancakes topped with fruit which was quite plentiful and filling. Yes there was a line but the meal was well worth the wait, I try to eat breakfast there every time I am in Chicago as I find it to be one the best breakfast spots in the city.

2x in 4 days

I love this place. I came to Chicago with my mother after an internship at the University of Wisconsin and we went to this place 2 times the 4 days we were there. Service is great, food is amazing, and I don’t mind the wait. I’ll be sure to visit again when I’m in Chicago. Recommend: Huevos juancheros

Regular visitors fro Milw. WI
By bruciti on 10/23/2006
My wife & I visit Chicago at least 3 or 4 times a year, as we only live 90 miles away. We've dined at Tempo's several times now, and have yet to be disapppointed by the service or quality of the meals. We recommended Tempo to my brother, who was in town from DC. I know it's good to try different establishments, but lately we seem to gravitate back for breakfast before we return to WI!

BAD BAD BUSINESS
By evasivem on 09/10/2006
My friends and I had always considered Tempo to be a great place to eat after a great party, bad break up, or even an evening alone. But in the early morning hours of September 9, 2006, Tempo Cafe decided to show us how much they valued our patronage by having us removed from the establishment by several of Chicago's finest. Tempo's disorganized, shoddy method of seating people created a back-up in the waiting area, and a drunken party of six bustled their way to the front of the line, creating a disturbance, disrespecting every other patron in their path, including my party. Although management witnessed such behavior, they refused to do anything about it, and instead seated us at opposing ends of the restaurant, assuming that all parties would behave. They were wrong, particularly when the drunken party of six picked YET ANOTHER fight with the party seated next to them. When the police were called, management forced everyone who had had ANY contact with the disruptive party to leave. That included us. After many attempts to reason with both management and the police, we were left in the rain, insulted and embarrassed, and worst of all, HUNGRY, all because management refused to intervene when the problem was initially presented. AND the best part is, when the police arrived, they even asked the black people NOT associated with our party to leave. . . Sorry Tempo, all black people don't know each other. . . I had always assumed that my education, my status, my poised and calm demeanor would allow others to see that I and the people I associate with are reasonable people, and would in turn, treat me with respect and reason. However, Tempo proved me wrong. Because of this experience, I would not recommend this restuarant to anyone. Thanks for the good time, Tempo. p.s. and the service left a little much to be desired as well. . .
