Paradoxically, the word ''tiffin'' refers to a light midday meal or luncheon, yet Tiffin's fare reaches well beyond the insubstantial. Located in the heart of the Indian section of West Devon Avenue, this upscale restaurant specializing in both North and South Indian cuisine garners a diverse and sizeable crowd on weekend evenings. Its popularity has three sources the flavorful food, the wonderful service and the white tablecloth dcor. With a traditional clay oven, or tandoor, on the premises, lamb, chicken and fish are baked to simple healthy perfection. Vegetarian entrees abound for those more of the South Indian culinary mindset, and while there are plenty of dishes for the faint of palate, there are plenty more vindaloo and chili creations for tongue- searing pleasure. No less than eight kinds of rice grace the menu along with 10 (yes, 10) different types of clay oven-baked bread. Leave a bit of room for an aromatic cup of masala tea at the end of an exotic and satisfying meal. -- Debra Strober

Always at least one surprise
By lgthaviu on 02/20/2007
We eat here often when we go down to Devon. We try to order a variety of items and here, even some familiar dishes have some surprising flavors. For example, we enjoy many varieties of dal (lentils) and were very pleased to try a dish made with a pronounced inclusion of cinnamon in the mix. Same for the lamb with sauce made from almond-milk. I think my own cooking has benefitted from eating at this place and I would highly reccommend it to others. LT

We had dinner there last night - the sag paneer, rogan josh, Hyderabad eggplant and murgh makhani were all excellent, as was the poori. We were offered a choice of mild, medium or spicy and we took the spicy, which was a good choice. Place was nice and clean - the meats were lean, no bone or fat scraps like a lot of Indian restaurants. Service was normal and friendly, not indifferent and surly like some others on this street. Portions were a little small and prices a little high, but guess that's the trade-off for good quality. Taj Mahal beers delicious.
