When Red Wine Room closed after a short but sweet stint in Roscoe Village, it left a void for those looking for a great neighborhood wine bar. Now comes Volo (a Latin word that translates into ''flight'' in English), which boasts a team of high-profile restaurant folks. Restaurateur Jon Young (Kitsch'n on Roscoe), chef Stephen Dunne (former chef at MK, Spago) and pastry chef Mindy Segal (MK, Hot Chocolate) team up for this sexy wine bar and eatery that promises to bring excitement to the area again. Located a stone's throw from Kitsch'n, Volo features small portions of American Contemporary fare. As with many eateries in the area, the cuisine highlights organic products from local farmers. Of course, as the name suggests, an extensive wine list is another highlight, and diners should relax knowing that they've done all the work for them. Each entree offers a wine suggestion, and many options are available by the glass. In an area big on outdoor dining and lounging (the spacious year 'round patio of Village Tap is across the street), Volo plans to keep up by featuring two options: a simple sidewalk cafe and a European-inspired patio with daybeds and lounge chaises.

My New Home for Summer

Volo delivers! Stellar wines (dozens and dozens by the glass - you are sure to find one that will make you rethink your favorites), great and informed staff recommendations (our waiter was low key & very friendly), a gem of a foodie destination (small plates are quite large, and a value), and its hip but "no attitude" atmosphere have won us over! We liked the seasonal food and boutique wine influences. Don't miss their incredible hidden patio in back, it was too cold tonight - but truly one of a kind!

First and last meal at Volo...
By dstreets on 02/17/2008
I made reservations for a group of us at Volo a few weeks in advance and we all were excited to try this place after reviewing the menu online. We arrived and were seated at a booth at the front window. The location was very drafty and cold but we made the best of it. While the food was tasty, the service was rushed and very much on the order of your typical greasy spoon (we're talking Denny's here). Moreover, the wine servings were so stingy that we finally concluded the only way we were ever going to get a decent glass was to just buy a bottle. To the management of this restaurant; you need to get your wait staff up to par and for the price, you need to be a bit more generous with the wine servings (the waitress gave an inch - literally). There are defintely better dinner options available in this City.
