For well over 30 years, the Blue Wisp Jazz Club has stood as the finest jazz venue in the Cincinnati area, attracting the cream of local and national players to its intimate stage. Although it has undergone numerous changes over its long and storied history, the one thing that has remained unchanged is the passion and dedication of owner Marjean Wisby, the club's patrons and the jazz talent that unites them all. Wisby founded the club over 30 years ago as a local bar, instituting a jazz policy a few years after is opened. Local jazz legends Cal Collins and Jimmy McGary became regulars, and national luminaries like Herb Ellis and Clifford Jordon soon followed. Marjean Wisby took over operations after her husband's death in 1984, and in 1988 the club's landlord expanded their adjoining business facilities, necessitating a move to the Blue Wisp's current location in downtown Cincinnati. One of the most consistent draws at the club over the years has been the nationally recognized Blue Wisp Big Band, a rotating cast of local and regional jazz talent. Be forewarned, though, that the Blue Wisp is not a smoke-free environment.
