Cincinnati's most famous restaurateur, Jeff Ruby, continues to top himself with Carlo & Johnny, arguably his most extravagant, most over-the-top gangster-themed steakhouse. It opened its doors in late 2001, after millions of dollars in renovations and enhancements to modernize the former private mansion on Cincinnati's northeast side. Inside, diners choose from three distinctly different dining rooms: The Emerald Room, with its green velvet walls, has an old-time Hollywood feel; the Club Room resembles an exclusive men's club, with stuffed big game and a stone fireplace; and the Chicago Room feels like an Italian, Chicago-style steakhouse. Expect the same signature steaks you'd find at other Ruby joints, plus seafood, pasta and chops. Although the decor, service and food are enough to make the evening memorable, it's the clientele that provides the real show. Expect to see the city's celebs, groupies and premier socialites fawning all over each other. Bring your credit cards -- prices are hefty.

RUSH RUSH ...Turn Those Tables
By scotlepage1960 on 02/17/2007
My Ladyfried and I have dined at Carlo and Johnny about a half dozen times in the past two years or so...but after our last experience, we won't be going back. When I spend $200 for two for dinner (I always do with the wine and a tip) I do NOT expect to be rushed. There is a FINE LINE between attentive service at a restaurant and rushing the Customer to simply "turn tables" so that the restaurant can generate more income. On our last visit the line was clearly crossed..... it was a "one-two" punch....the waiter rushed us from the very onset and the busboy literally took food away that we had not finished! Our whole meal lasted an hour and 10 minutes....I expect one hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours is a normal pace and not at all unreasonable to restaurant Management. What made matters worse is that there Manager DID contact me and apologize...which is a good thing. But what left a bitter taste is that he promised to "make it better" by mailing us I assume what was supposed to be some kind of discount certificate and nothing ever came. Great steaks are only PART of the equation Jeff Ruby and Company.....good service and respect for your patrons is EQUALLY as important as good food. If I want to be rushed I will go to Montgomery Inn where it is to be expected.
