Don't put Cumin in the same category as most other Tristate Indian restaurants -- this place stands alone as a unique ethnic eatery. You'll find no lunch buffet or overly sauced dishes here. Instead, Cumin focuses on a few traditional dishes served with a contemporary take. Nibble on juicy, flavorful tandoori mushrooms, roasted in a high-temperature tandoor oven and coated in Indian spices, or share bhel poori, a crunchy mix of spiced potatoes, fried noodles and onions. Entrees include tender, roasted masala lamb, duck, several curried dishes, and vegetarian options. This Hyde Park bistro is quaint but small, with just a few tables and no bar for waiting, so you'll want to arrive early on weekend evenings. Or stop in during the week or during lunch -- you just might be able to grab a table amongst the crowd of couples and young professionals.
