Columbus' young, gay crowd gathers here for crammed-together dancing, edgy music and a variety of outrageous performances. Weekend nights serve up some well-known local DJs, while other nights remain open for a variety of drag events and theme shows, which often include costumes, special effects and humorous dialogue. Those looking for the latest in sound systems (read: loud and booming), industrial-style atmosphere, far-out lighting effects and trendy fashions would do well to stop here for prime people-watching or a pick-me-up. Despite the minimalist decor, the venue is quite large (two floors) and clean. Be prepared to show ID if you look under 30, because the doormen are real sticklers. And it's best to come here with a friend or a group so as not to appear too lost in space. Axis also serves as a home for Reality Theatre, a highly respected local troupe that's well known for its way-off-Broadway offerings.
