Rate and Write a Review In 1992, the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery brought the Ameriflora flower show to the Franklin Park Conservatory, influencing the powers-that-be at the 1850s glass-enclosed Victorian structure to provide the grounds with a much-needed expansion and face lift. These days at the conservatory, you can escape Columbus' erratic and often gloomy weather and select a year-round climate of your choice by exploring one of several zones that represent different regions of the world. Visit the cool Himalayans with steep rock walls, rarified air and plants that mimic Tibet, China and Nepal. The rainforests of South America, Asia and Africa are recreated through tropical foliage, blossoming flora and native birdcalls. Unusual shapes and imposing sandstone formations can be found in the "desert," and the South Pacific is depicted with bright plants, fish, fragrant blossoms, waterfalls and more. The understated Bonsai court boasts a flower-filled pond surrounded by ginkgo, pine and cherry trees. The conservatory also offers classes for adults, children and families; so if you want to learn how to make a butterfly condo or raise orchids, you've come to the right place. -- Sandra Gurvis
