J.P.'s Barbeque Ribs & Chicken   

Open since the early 1960s, JP's provides no-frills, down-home good eatin'. Ribs are the mainstay on the menu, but chicken and pork sandwiches are also popular. Depart from the usual with fried whitefish and shrimp, chili dogs, burgers, chopped steak and more. Accompaniments vary from "mean greens" and potato salad to barbecued baked beans and mac 'n' cheese. Everyone seems to know everyone else here, although the founder's family (still running the business) readily welcomes newcomers. Large coolers at the front of the store hold an eclectic selection of malt liquor, Wild Irish Rose wine, bottled water, soft drinks, sausages and heads of lettuce. Even those who stop by for lottery tickets are chatted up -- though if you arrive in anything dressier than casual attire, you'll likely get a good "ribbing."
