Ah, the dollar store. It certainly fills a niche -- bottom-feeding in the deep shadows of Wal-Mart and Price Club, funneling cheap, obscure wares from fly-by-night importers, along with the occasional back-channel brand names, to the shoppers of America. The Amigo Dollar Store is no exception. Walk up and down the worn green carpet and wonder at the variety of goodies ranging from useful to goofy: bathtub appliqus, bags of plastic fruit, magnetic memo holders, blinding gold place-mats. At the front, the store has some pricier items, like a VCR from Sansui with a logo that mimics Sanyo -- not exactly the gold standard for cheap knockoffs. And yet, there is method to this madness: You might not need those Styrofoam tortilla warmers, but the prices will convince you otherwise.
