A New York original, Lord & Taylor built its a reputation on high-quality merchandise and service, catering to a clientele that demands quality and is willing to pay for it. Everything from fine jewelry to designer clothing is available in this intimate, hassle-free department store. Lord & Taylor may be short on cutting-edge, but it continues to serve up classic American style, from Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Ellen Tracy to some off-the-beaten-path designs, such as Betsey Johnson and Regis Philbin's latest neckwear. Private-label leather ($99-$450) is terrific. In addition to offering updated classic fashions for the entire family, the store carries well-stocked fragrance and cosmetic counters, gift items, and a gourmet candy selection. The chain is noted for its collection of Special Occasion formal wear and hard-to-find shoe styles. May Department Stores, which also owns Foleys, acquired Lord & Taylor in 1986, becoming the nations fourth-largest department store conglomerate. Today, Lord & Taylor operates 84 stores in 32 markets. Since the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979, The Star-Spangled Banner has been played daily on the public address system in all Lord & Taylor stores just before opening.
