Open is open. Summer 2002 saw the debut of this new bar/lounge in Deep Ellum. The name reflects the establishment's adherence to the traditionally creative atmosphere of the Deep Ellum Historic District. Open embraces cultural influences from Manhattan to Amsterdam, combining a New York state of mind with European-style electronic music, sophisticated appetizers, wines, champagne and mixed drinks. The 2,400-square-foot space, designed by artist and designer David Nelson, based on a concept by Club Clearview's Jeffrey Yarbrough, has room for up to 300 people. Inside, styles, fabrics, colors and textures have been choreographed to create a decor that moves. The green exterior gives way to reds, earth tones and black-and-chrome. Sturdy limestone tables balance a vinyl floor imprinted with a contemporary rug pattern. Stone contrasts with smooth plexi tabletops, ceilings and reflective design elements. Local artist Chris Lattanzio's carved, wooden umbrella, in the open position, hangs from the wall alongside framed photographic art. Plants adorn an art glass window. Open offers DJ-played music that switches after midnight from subdued, hypnotic and tranquil to upbeat and energetic. Wines are available by the bottle or glass, and in addition to the popular martinis and cosmopolitans, you can choose from a wide selection of mixed drinks. The menu features seven small gourmet plates and includes caviar cream dip with sesame rice crackers, sugar wonton crisps and other delights designed by Liberty Noodles executive chef Greg O'Neill. - Gary Taylor
