Were the good folks at the Barley House forced out? Not at all! The ownership just didn't want to have to start charging $5 for a pint of beer. With the Knox/Henderson area gaining momentum (and high-end boutiques, dance clubs and restaurants), it quickly became apparent that the laid-back pub with the best stage for local bands in Dallas needed to be among its own kind. They found refuge in the space formerly occupied by the Green Elephant on Yale: same bar, just a different location. The crowd may change a little as the new spot is indigenous to the SMU student being just a hundred yards from fraternity row, but the smooth draft beer and the ear-poppin' live riffs of some of the best local talent in the city will still draw a loyal base of brew enthusiasts and 21-to-over-30 crowd that calls the Barley House home. If the music doesn't bring you in, perhaps the specials will. Barley House runs deals almost every night. Wednesdays, for example, is often half price on food.

Still the Green Elephant

Green Elephant is back in business under a new name--Barley House. The atmosphere is exaclty as it was when I was a student at SMU some 7 years ago--lame and not a whole got going on. If you are into the high maintenance crowd (fake, snooty people) then this is your place. Otherwise, one beer will do, the off to lowest greenville. Parking is still horrendous!!

This is possibly the best neighborhood bar in Dallas. Some of the best live music in Dallas a couple of times a week, and it's always free. Cold beer at a reasonable price and the people-watching is first rate. You can always find an owner who'll debate the merits of the Who over the Beatles for some lively conversation. Dynamite hangout.
