Before the owners of the little house on Henderson turned it into one of Dallas' best-kept dining secrets, it was their home. Today, you still get the impression someone lives here. The house is cozy, and the casa-style Mexican food is like Abuela used to make. Along with fresh-made corn tortillas, fresh salsa is delivered to your table in a molcajete, a traditional mortar and pestle made out of lava rock. The recipes belong to the owner and she still supervises the cooking. Unlike other Mexican restaurants, you can get breakfast here, too. Menudo, a traditional Mexican breakfast and also a hangover remedy, is served on Saturday and Sunday, and on these mornings you'll see the steaming bowls of the spicy red soup on almost every table. No longer a secret, people from all over the area come to eat at the little house on Henderson. -- John Vega

OWNED BY A MURDER
By whatsuppendejo on 06/08/2007
THE OWNER ACQUIRED THIS RESTAURANT AFTER HER HUSBAND WAS MURDERED UNDER VERY SHADY CIRCUMSTANCES ALL EVIDENCE SEEMS TO IMPLICATE THAT SHE HAD HIM SET UP. THE NAME CUQUITAS AND THE ORIGINAL RECIPES ARE NOT OF THE OWNERS DOING. CUQUITAS WAS ORIGINALLY A SMALL CAFE IN A SECTION OF DALLAS ON HARRY HINES KNOWN AS LITTLE MEXICO..IN THE 70'S AND EARLY 80'S THE OWNER WHOS NICKNAME WAS CUCA (MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER) RAN THAT RESTAURANT LIKE A WELL TUNED ENGINE, AND IF YOU ASK ANY ONE THAT GREW UP NEAR LITTLE MEXICO..THEY ATE THERE..AND THEY LOVED "MAMA CUCA" SHE LATER LET HER SON IN LAW TAKE IT OVER..AND HE MOVED IT TO HENDERSON IN A RENT HOUSE HE OWNED. SOMETIME LATER WHILE WITH HIS SECOND WIFE..HE WAS SHOT BY SOMEONE HE KNEW OBVIOUSLY AS HE LET THE SUSPECT INTO HIS HOUSE..THERE WAS NO FORCED ENTRY. A COURT BATTLE OVER MANY OF HIS BELONGINGS AND ASSETS WENT ON AS THE CURRENT WOMAN HE WAS WITH TRIED TO TAKE EVERYTHING EVEN WHAT HE LEFT HIS CHILDREN (MY COUSINS) SHE GOT THE RESTAURANT..AND HAD THE NERVE TO WANT TO CONTINUE TO USE THE NAME AND THE LOGO..WHICH WAS A PORTRAIT OF "MAMA CUCA" SHE WON THE RIGHT TO USE THE NAME...BUT NOT THE LIKENESS OF MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER..HOWEVER THE LOGO NOW ATTEMPTS TO MIMIC HER...ALL THE RECIPES ARE MAMA CUCAS WHO HAS SINCE PASSED AWAY...AND I THINK IT IS A SHAME THAT HER NAME IS USED TO MAKE THIS LOWLIFE OF A PERSON WEALTHY...AGAIN THIS IS MY THEORY ONLY AND IS NOT A FACT OF WHO ACTUALLY COMMITED THE CRIME...BUT ASK HER ABOUT IT...AND YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF ASKED TO LEAVE.

Salsa, Food is great!!
By tsbdawn on 12/25/2005
Those are the best fajitas we have had! The salsa was hot and tasty - shewie! We loved the complimentary homemade corn tortillas with butter - yum! The staff was delightfully warm and friendly. Authentic Mexican food, and obviously a neighborhood favorite - but we would come miles for this! No doubt many others already have the same idea in mind. Next time we go back - and soon - we're taking some friends! MUY BUENO, CUQUITA'S! The price is right, and payment can be made in a number of forms. They got it right!
